Official Airport Policy
Smoking is allowed in designated cocktail lounges and restaurants in the gate areas at Sky Harbor. There is one smoking area per concourse at Sky Harbor. The airport also has two smoking lounges, one in Terminal 2, and one in Terminal 4. Smoking is also permitted outdoors in designated areas on the curbs.
Notes
- Smoking is allowed in two designated lounges, and eight bars and restaurants. Some of these facilities are separately enclosed and some are not. These smoking facilities, most of which are not separately ventilated, were built after airport employees signed a petition in 1998 demanding that the airport adopt a smokefree policy. Rather than agree to the employees' requests, the airport was persuaded by Philip Morris and associated consulting firms to adopt a policy of "accommodation." The result is that airport patrons and employees are still exposed to secondhand smoke, the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States.
Please urge Director Krietor to protect the health of travelers and airport employees from the dangerous health effects of secondhand smoke by making the Phoenix airport smokefree. As one of the busiest airports in the world, Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport should consider the fact that most people, including airport customers, are nonsmokers who support smokefree air policies.
